Nostalgia of the Midwest Americana.
To think of places you were. At one point in your life. An impenetrable moment, frozen in time. You can return to the place, but it will never be the same, because you have changed. Others have changed. The air around it has changed. The wind which had blown against the frames of the structures which inhabited that place has changed. People grow and change, but places grow and change as well. Two ever-evolving stories intersecting at a climactic, familiar moment in this continuous, flowing journey of life.
The photo series that follows is my experience with this as I revisit a place vital to my upbringing. Growing up, I’d spend a week in the summers at a small cottage town on the coast of Lake Erie. Until life got in the way and distracted me from the joyful tranquility of childhood. The photos that follow are the result of my experience over the past two years returning to this place and the emotions that followed.
Welcome to Nostalgia of the Midwest Americana.
the unfamiliar but also the familiar.
fragmented nostalgic memories split along uneven feelings.
you look for clarity, but it's not clear.
you find the forgotten places where you used to roam.
buildings from the past, becoming the present, filling your soul with glimpsing emotions, yearned for from years of past moments, ever-evolving until the next time they grace your presence.
the emotions of being present in a place that meant so much to you in your past, but it’s no longer the same, and you are no longer the same. you’re different and this place is different.
it’s not clear, but it doesn’t have to be clear. what you remember is what you remember, and what you forget is what you forget. and what you forget is no longer needed. because now is the present.
and the present is an ocean of uncertainties and certainties that blend the past and future together.
and become the thoughts, ideas, and dreams that fill your mind and soul at this moment, here and now.
